Rural Transportation Planning Program
Through the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT)Rural Transportation
Planning Program, the A-NPDC provides transportation planning assistance to the Eastern Shore's
21 local governments. A-NPDC assistance includes updating the
transportation elements of comprehensive plans and zoning ordinances, bicycle and
pedestrian planning, development of GIS (geographic information system data)
, and preparation of VDOT Transportation Enhancement Grant applications. Transportation Technical Advisory Committee The Transportation Committee started as the Public Transportation Committee in 1993 and became the Transportation Technical Advisory Committee (TTAC) in 1995. The A-NPDC Transportation Technical Advisory Committee coordinates transportation planning on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The committee has assisted with regional planning efforts for U.S. Route 13, STAR Transit, a Mid-Chesapeake Bay Ferry, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Eastern Shore Bicycle Plan and other Eastern Shore facilities. Membership is determined by the A-NPDC's contract with VDOT. A-NPDC locality members (both counties and the Town of Chincoteague), the Federal Highway Administration, and VDOT are mandated. Additional members can be appointed by the A-NPDC. Currently they include the towns of Cape Charles and Onancock, STAR Transit, Bay Coast Railroad, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel District, and the Accomack-Northampton Transportation District Commission. The Transportation Committee's work is funded using VDOT State Planning and Research funds and a 20 percent match from the A-NPDC.
