Household Hazardous Waste Collection
The Eastern Shore of Virginia Ground Water Committee has held an annual Household Hazardous
Waste Collection since 2004. The Ground Water Committee has worked with various
partners including: Accomack County, Northampton County, Eastern Shore Soil and
Water Conservation District, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation,
ESO Arts Center, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the
Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission to make these collections a reality.
The collection is organized to protect the Eastern Shore’s groundwater from illegal disposal
of material onto the ground or through septic or sewer drains. No commercial or industrial waste
is accepted. Persons who register are allowed to dispose of 30 pounds free.
Usable paint is donated to the Eastern Shore Food Bank. Over a hundred people
have participated and over six and a half tons of material
have been removed from the Eastern Shore since 2004. The Committee is currently
looking into having a collection that takes old computer equipment.
2008 Northampton Household Hazardous Waste Collection Details
The 2008 Collection in Northampton County was very successful. Nearly three thousands
pounds of hazardous material was collected during the Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Day. Residents of Accomack and Northampton County brought their
household hazardous waste to be disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.
A recycling company, Care Environmental Corporation of Landing New Jersey was in
Eastville Saturday September 20th, 2008 for proper collection and disposal.
A representative from the Eastern Shore Food Bank was on site and accepted over
150 lbs. of usable paint. Paint is the most common household product that becomes
household hazardous waste.
